25 readings for Advent, extracted from J. C. Ryle's Expository Thoughts on the Gospels

For most of us, Advent is synonymous with Christmas. After all, don't our Advent calendars count down to December 25th? Isn't Advent a time to think about the birth of the baby in the manger, the angels and the shepherd? It certainly is.

Advent means the coming of the special baby who was laid in a manger in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. But J.C. Ryle would also remind people of the 'Second Advent' when Jesus will come again. On that day, Jesus will return to our world, not as a baby but as the unmistakable King of kings and Lord of lords.

Short, yet impactful Advent devotional on the first and second comings of Christ

In this Advent devotional crafted from his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, J.C. Ryles uses the first coming of Jesus as an opportunity to stress the importance of being prepared for his second coming. Each reading is short, yet impactful—making it easy to pause life for 5 or 10 minutes and read—and concludes with thoughtful, worshipful prayers you will want to memorize and repeat throughout your own life.

Excellent Advent Devotional

I am thankful for this Advent Devotional by JC Ryle. I just recently learned that the church historically has meditated on the Second Coming of Christ during the Advent season, along with his first coming in the Incarnation. This little devotional book does an excellent job of helping you meditate on both. The devotionals for each day are short (just 2 pages) but packed with wisdom. I enjoyed how some of the subsequent days had meditations over the same passage as the days before, but with new insights. The short prayers written at the end of each devotional helped me to apply what I was meditating on. In short, this book is great for personal use around Advent season, and could even be utilized in church services. An all around great resource for yourself and to gift to others.

I do work for 10ofThose and received a copy of this book for free, but this is my honest review of it!
