What does the man who took the gospel to China's millions have in common with the creator of Wensleydale cheese, or with the inventor of the Crow's Nest, or the man responsible for the abolition of slavery throughout the Commonwealth, or with a member of the famous Bronte family?  Each one (along with all twenty-one major subjects of this book, plus others) was trusting in Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and they were all from Yorkshire.  The county is rightly famed for its dales and moors, its cricket and  its tea, but primarily Yorkshire is known for down-to-earth characters.  Fine Gold from Yorkshire introduces Christians from the county whose lives have impacted millions across the world.  Read it and smile, be inspired and stirred, but most of all look to the God of these people: the God who loves people from every county and country.

Faith Cook, daughter of Stanley and Norah Rowe, missionaries of the China Inland Mission (now OMF), was born in north-west China. After missionaries were evicted from the country in 1951, she returned to the UK and attended Clarendon School in North Wales before proceeding to teacher training college in Bromley, Kent. She married Paul Cook in 1961, and they served several evangelical churches in the Midlands and Yorkshire before his retirement. They have a daughter, four sons and ten grandchildren, and now live in Breaston, Derbyshire.

Short Portraits of Faithful Lives in Yorkshire

In Fine Gold From Yorkshire, Faith Cook offers a collection of brief biographical sketches drawn from notable figures connected to Yorkshire. The range is striking, touching on well-known names in English history as well as lesser-known individuals, each presented through the lens of their Christian faith and influence. Each account traces key moments such as upbringing, conversion, and later work, highlighting how belief shaped their lives and wider impact on society. While the entries are concise, they are still engaging and give enough detail to hold attention without feeling overwhelming. The book works well as an easy read or something to pick up in short intervals, with a devotional feel to its structure. While a deeper level of detail would have added more weight in places, it remains an accessible and interesting introduction to these figures and their stories of faith.
