At the end of his life, Daniel Rowland (1711–1790) described himself as “a poor sinner … depending entirely on the merits of a crucified Saviour.” He preached for decades in a quiet corner of Wales and left few papers behind. Yet his impact was anything but small.

Celebrated by figures such as J. C. Ryle, Howel Harris, and Lady Huntingdon—some placing him second only to Paul or Whitefield—Rowland became a central voice in the Welsh Awakening. For 55 years, he urged hearers toward Christ. No wonder Dr. Martyn Lloyd‑Jones turned to the eighteenth century—and often to Rowland himself—whenever he sought spiritual renewal.
